Q: What training can I access if I work or volunteer with children and young
people in sport?
Those who coach or volunteer with children and young people, should attend sportscoach
UK’s three-hour Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop. This covers what is meant by the phrase “child
abuse”, how to recognise signs of abuse and what to do if you have a concern about a child. Workshops are available
throughout Scotland and many Scottish governing bodies also organise this training.
Please note that some local authorities
provide basic child protection training to volunteers through their child protection committees. To find your local committee,
click here and scroll down to ‘child protection committees’.
If you are a club child protection officer, we recommend
that you attend the Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop or equivalent. This should be followed by attending the
CHILDREN 1ST In Safe Hands club child protection officer workshop, which has been developed for people in clubs
with a role in protecting children.
This three-hour workshop builds on the basic knowledge covered in previous training
to provide the participant with training in how to implement child protection policies and procedures within their sports
club. The workshop looks at what makes a club ‘safe’ or ‘aware’, examines relevant legislation and
government guidance, and outlines how to implement procedures and manage concerns and allegations.
