Anyone involved in child protection knows the mantra: "Child Protection
is everyone's responsibility". And at Perth and Kinross Sports Council (PKSC) they’re really taking that message
to heart by working closely with the local authority and clubs in the area to put the issue firmly on the radar.
The
first step they took was to appoint a sub-committee whose remit was to look into child protection issues, including writing
a child protection policy. A year later, at the AGM in May 2008, the Sports Council constitution was amended to include the
new child protection policy.
Members of PKSC seem to realise the importance of keeping children safe in sport and have
supported the decision that the same line be taken by clubs in the area. PKSC are now asking clubs three things:
- That
they have the minimum operating requirements as per the The 2006 Accord for the protection of Children in Scottish Sport.
- In
order to receive grant funding from the Sports Council, the above will be an immediate requirement.
- In order to become
a member of Perth and Kinross Sports Council from the AGM in 2009, clubs must have a child protection policy in place.
Chair
Ashley Sinclair says: "Although we have 'completed the work' – we could sit back and say that we've
got policies and mechanisms in place now – we felt that it was a good idea to keep the child protection sub-committee
running. We meet regularly to review issues and are pleased that reaction from clubs regarding enquiries, information and
advice has all been very positive."
The Sports Council is now putting together an information pack, which includes
additional subsidised child protection courses in Perth and outlying areas, possible roadshow events with sub-committee members
who have already attended various child protection courses.
They will also work with a dedicated child protection officer
from Perth and Kinross Council to help clubs with their transition.
