Children with a disability

Q: Are children with a disability as susceptible to abuse as other children?

Abuse is about the exploitation of power and trust. Children with disabilities may be dependent on others for a number of reasons e.g. a child who requires physical support. They may also have difficulty communicating with others and therefore might not find it easy to protect themselves. Both examples illustrate some of the reasons why children with disabilities may be more vulnerable to abuse.

Q: How big a problem is the abuse of disabled children in sport?

There have not been any studies to date that looked specifically at abuse of disabled children and young people in sport. However, research conducted outside sport found that not only are there are individuals who target disabled children for abuse, but that disabled children are more likely to be abused than non-disabled children.
