At basketballscotland, we have recently launched our Child Protection Programme and are proud to be the first SGB to sign up to the 2006 Accord for the Protection of Children in Scottish Sport.

Our vision is to ensure that every child has an opportunity to play basketball in a fun and safe environment. The aim of the Child Protection Programme is to support our clubs in delivering this and raise awareness of child protection issues among our members.

Child protection is a very complex area which many clubs find difficult to understand. By offering this Child Protection Programme, we hope to make it easier for them to embrace child protection and work towards our shared vision.

Our programme includes:

  • information dissemination via a fortnightly club broadcast and an annual club forum to raise awareness of the latest developments in child protection
  • free Disclosure Scotland checks on behalf of all our clubs
  • a child protection policy template for clubs to adapt to suit their needs
  • free resources for children, coaches and volunteers. The Stay Safe and Have Fun in Sport leaflet will be given to every child by our clubs’ child protection officers; The Quick Child Protection Guidelines, which include code of conduct, information on what to do in the event of a child protection concern and local contact details of police and social work services, will be sent to every coach and club child protection officer
  • training grants which allow clubs to attend local child protection workshops
  • support and advice from basketballscotland’s national child protection officer
  • website support through the basketballscotland website

It is important to acknowledge that protecting children in sport involves more than just having policy documents or disclosure checking in place. At basketballscotland, we are demonstrating how we plan to keep clubs, coaches, parents, children and young people informed as they create fun and safe environments for all children playing basketball in Scotland.
