Dumfries and Galloway Council Leisure & Sport Section

Dumfries and Galloway Council Leisure & Sport Section has produced Child Protection procedures that include a commitment to child protection training for all leisure and sport staff.

These procedures link in to the wider council procedures, and provide detailed information relating to the day-to-day situations in which staff operate. The Leisure & Sport Section is also represented within the local authority child protection committee and child protection training sub-group.

The procedures include types of abuse, recruitment, dealing with allegations, and good practice guidelines.

As part of this commitment to protect children, all staff within the Leisure & Sport Section who may come into contact with children are required to attend a locally delivered Sports Coach UK (SCUK) 'Good Practice and Child Protection' workshop, funded by the Council. Staff must also familiarise themselves with the child protection procedures that are distributed as part of the induction process.

The Leisure & Sport Section also offers the SCUK workshop to sports clubs and community groups. The department has secured internal funding to offer a number of these courses free of charge.

Dumfries and Galloway Council signed up to the 2006 Accord in April 2007.
