Sports Services at Angus Council work in partnership with the local Social Work Department in delivering a rolling child
protection training programme for staff and ensuring staff child protection policies are up to date.
All Sports Services staff attend a full day's training session with a training co-ordinator from social services.
To ensure consistency in approach, all Leisure Facilities Managers/Staff, Sports Development Officers, LMart Staff (3)
– they are the Local Multi-Agency Resource Teams, providing early screening and support to vulnerable young people in
Angus - attends the sessions, which are specifically tailored for the sports environment.
A service level agreement between Leisure Services and the coordinator, allows for the training to be delivered free in
return for reduced leisure facility rates.
The partnership also enables Sports Services to seek expertise on updating the Sports Services Policy and Code of Conduct
for staff. The department is now also recognised in Angus Child Protection Committee's Inter-Agency Guidelines. These guidelines,
prepared by the Angus Child Protection Committee, are designed to aid and promote multi agency co-operation in protecting
children from harm. They are intended to help make services relevant and appropriate to the child’s needs and to ensure
that children are protected. The focus of service delivery must be on ensuring services meet children’s needs before
difficulties escalate into harm to the child and on ensuring appropriate and effective response to all children where concerns
exist for their safety and protection.
Sports Services are delighted with the partnership and have benefited greatly from the expertise that has been available
locally. There are plans for the future to evolve the partnership by opening up the training to other departments within the
council and perhaps externally.
